An Example of F-5 damage from the 16 April 1998 tornado that passed through

Lawrence County.

The following pictures show what was a well constructed 2 story brick house

located in northwestern Lawrence County. They were taken four days after

the tornado hit. Two people took refuge in the house's basement. They were

hospitalized for about a week from injuries they received.

The first picture shows that the foundation was wiped clean. The top of the

house is deposited on the bluff back behind the house. The floor was

sheared off the anchor bolts. The grass in the yard, which family members

told us could have be mowed prior to the tornado, has been scoured from the

ground. This can be seen along the driveway, in the left hand side of the

picture.

The second picture shows a small room that was in the rear of the garage.

Note how the linoleum flooring that was glued to the concrete has been

peeled off. Also note the scouring of the ground, and the random direction

the trees have been laid down on the hillside behind the house.
